Neat story. I also saw something on him in the Tampa press talking about they may grab him at the end of the third round if he’s available. The NFL draft begins Thursday (first round). He won’t get drafted that day but maybe he does on Friday (rounds 2-3). For sure, he will go Saturday if he isn’t drafted on Friday.

The article in The Athletic concentrated on the appeal of Luke McCaffrey to the 49ers. In their 1st round pick tonight, the Niners chose Florida WR Ricky Pearsall, who looks to me to be very similar to Luke, although ranked higher by the draft watchers. The highlights shown on the ABC/ESPN broadcast looked a lot like Luke's, including a sick one-handed catch.

These folks thought SF would draft a cornerback tonight with its #31 pick: https://www.ninersnation.com/2024/4/25/2...rst-round.

And Luke is not in their pre-draft Top 20 list of eligible WRs: https://www.ninersnation.com/2024/4/15/2...-nfl-draft .

I hope things work out well for Luke in the coming rounds. But I'm now wondering if the 49ers will spend another pick on a WR like Luke. (Only if he falls to the 6th round, I'd think.)

Yea, I think Niners drafting him in 3rd round is now out of the question. A team like Pittsburgh, who visited with Luke and could draft more than 1 WR, could take him in 4th round.

It's not every day I see a picture of a Rice Owl prominently on the front page of the digital Chicago Tribune!

(I'd link it, but i assume the front page will change soon, and the actual article that's linked from the front page, which is about several top prospects for the Bears, doesn't have the picture.)

Denver too. I don’t think the odds are great (maybe 20 percent or so), but if there continues to be a lot of receivers drafted, he may go tonight. San Francisco is also rumored to be trading some of their star receivers for more picks. If that happens, they could still pick Luke.

But chances are probably strongest he goes in the fourth round. I would be very surprised if he lasts all the way to the fifth round.

This image? (Scrolled down about one-third of the way from the top of to see this just now.)

I didn't see Luke in the list of 25 prospects ... before the paywall shut down my access ... long before I was shown the full 25. If Chicago resident Walt has subscription access, perhaps he can tell us what the Trib said about Luke.

Highest Rice draft pick since 2013 I think? McDonald went in the second round and Gaines was also a third round pick.

First draftee under Bloomgren.

A few picks earlier, HCU had its first draft pick ever (a DE/edge transfer from Cornell).

Washington’s new GM was in San Francisco the past few years so he had a McCaffrey connection there. Good landing spot for Luke - Daniels to McCaffrey lives on!

Do you go back to the Bill McPeak days? And the Mark Russell version of "Hail to the Redskins"?

Hail to the Redskins!
Praise be their name.
Why are we cheering?
They have-n't won a game!!

The first mock draft I saw had Luke going at pick #209. Quite a improvement.

No more Rice guys drafted (as expected). A few guys may get a chance to be an undrafted free agent. But I doubt anyone else gets much of a chance to make a team.

I could see several guys drafted in 2025 though.

Funny! I remember Mark Russell but not his version of our classic touchdown song. My family moved to the DC area in ‘66, when Otto Graham took over from McPeak. When Frank Ryan, a friend of my parents, came to finish up his career I was sold. For better or worse!

RE: Luke McCaffrey
I grew up in the south during the Joe Kuharich/Mike Nixon/Bill McPeak era. Under the NFL's then regional TV approach, we got the Redskins games. After being forced to watch a decade of ineptitude, I became a Redskin hater, and nothing since has changed me. I got tired of the Redskins about the time Lombardi made the Packers winners, and with Aabama grad Bart Starr at QB I became a fan.

When the AFL came along, we got the Oilers games and they were winning, so I became a fan. I got to Rice about the time the Cowboys starte winning and became a fan of theirs, particularly when being closer to the picture made me understand just how ineptly the Oilers were being run after Don Suman left the organization.
