At least the Owls hold the tie breaker, 3-0 in head-to-head competition.

Sad to see two former Owl greats struggle.

Here's the difference (as I've mentioned before), Rice has way more to offer in terms of facilities, location and academics (albeit way to high of cost) than HCU. So, if you want to normalize the comparison Berkman is doing a much better job than Cruz.

I wss going to make that point, but didn’t see the need for piling on.

You could also argue that Cruz plays a much tougher schedule than HCU.

Today's edition of the Thresher, which I get via e-mail, has a brutal and ominous cartoon involving Jose. It's a picture of the grim reaper with axe in hand...blood coming our of the first door labeled "Scott Pera"....blood coming out of the second door labeled "transfer portal"...and the grim reaper approaching the third door labeled "Jose Cruz, Jr". Sorry, no way I could figure out how to cut and past the image.

That cartoonist has done an excellent job of pulling no punches about Rice sports over the past year or two. JK, Bloom, Cruz...no one escapes the wit of Hong Lin Tsai.

I think it was alluding to almost our entire MBB roster entering the portal.

100% agree on the schedule difference. Non-Conference is comparable but the American is much tougher than the SLC.

As long as baseball players are only getting a 25% scholarship, I don't see things changing. The tuition is too expensive.

Vandy, Wake, and Duke seem to be in the top 25, with the same tuition issue.

Do they offer more tuition assistance than Rice? It sounds like the baseball players aren't getting the same help as the regular students.

Not only those 3 BUT TCU and Baylor. From an article earlier this week on first year costs at private universities in Texas..

“ At Rice, the sticker price for first-year students in 2024-25 will increase to $62,874, up from $57,210. Tuition for continuing students will be $59,784.
Fees and on-campus housing will bring the total cost to $81,893 for first-year students.”

While they don’t give a room, housing, and books figure Baylor tuition increase…

“ At Baylor University, undergraduate tuition will increase 6% next year to $58,100, up from $54,844, school officials said.”

Finally the current best program in Texas TCU….

“ Texas Christian University’s undergraduate tuition increase amounted to 7.9%, landing at $61,650. Estimated housing, food and book costs bring the total to $79,240, according to the university.”

The article points out few students pay the actual first year total and with respect to Rice, “ Rice awards are loan-free, and two-thirds of undergraduates will not pay full price because they receive need-based and merit aid, university officials said. (The average first-year aid offer in fall 2022 was $59,000.)” No figures were mentioned for Baylor or TCU.

Duke and Vandy are relevant comparisons. The others can play with "merit" discounts.

This weekend we actually face a team we should be able to beat. Memphis may have a 14-17 record, but their OOC schedule is a laughing stock...and even with that, their pitching is even worse than us.

Vandy, Wake and Duke allow academic aid added to any scholarship received (Ex: 30% Academic + 25% Scholly = 55% etc.). Rice does not. Most private schools provide other grant aid even to upper middle income families...Rice does not. However even 55% of an 85K bill is hardly enough when compared to quality public universities. It's a problem that, sadly, is only going to get worse for universities like Rice that for some reason refuse to "stack" academic and athletic aid.

I don't believe this article as far as it pertains to baseball. Rice awards are "loan free" but few athletes receive this "loan". If you throw in full rides for basketball, football and soccer you can see that these are the sports that eat up most of the "loan free" in athletics. Need based/merit goes to my point that the "poor", "rich (don't care)" or extremely smart take the majority (excluding the wealthy) of the aid. A middle class pitcher with good, not great, grades (but good enough for admittance) with a mid 90's FB will only get the partial scholarship offered. This pitcher will most likely go to a public university where the scholarship is beneficial and the families or student are saddled with massive loans. FYI, this is not conjecture but first hand experience.

Until University Admin remedies this mess, nothing they say about Athletics being an important part of the University and how they fully support D1 Athletics should be believed. It just lip service.
